Since their formation in their native Holland back in 1984 their music has been
constantly changing, always challenging and often quite breathtaking.
Some of
us have always been of the opinion that XYMOX are something special. A band
fired by electronic music but determined, always, to make something that is
very much their own. They are unique. First there was Clan of Xymox, formed
in Amsterdam but signed to leading English independent label 4-AD, home atone
time or another to the Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Pixies, Throwing Muses,
among others.
1985 saw
the release of the bands self-titled debut album. Recorded at Edinburgh's famed
Palladium Studios and co-produced with 4-AD supremo Ivo, it was a record full
of tumbling electro beats, throbbing sequencers and moody vocals. 1987 saw the
band provide a track for "Lonely is An Eyesore", a fascinating compilation
album highlighting the diversity of talent on the 4-AD roster. "Muscoviet
Musquito", sandwiched between Dif Juz and Dead Can Dance, showed a more
confident side to the band.
Album number
two was a very different beast. 1987's "Medusa" was mostly a dark
record, in places a chilling exercise in atmospherics and modern pop dynamics.
Aided by the impressive 12 inch single "A Million Things" the band
really started to create a buzz. Xymox were now not only inhabiting the arthouse
but filling dancefloors in the more discerning clubs. Oktober 1988 saw the band
and 4-AD part company. Encouraged by label boss Ivo they signed to Wing, a left
of centre subsidiary of media monolith PolyGram.
The band
shortened their name to Xymox and gave the world 1989's "Twist of Shadows"
album, their debut for Wing. It was in many ways a bold record and itshowed
that being signed to a major concern wasn't going to stifle a natural sense
of musical adventure. Supported by three excellent 12 inch releases "Obsession",
"Imagination" and"Blind Hearts" - this was an album that
confirmed the diversity of their appeal as again they clicked in both dance
and alternative circles. For years Xymox had enjoyed cult status across Europe
but were now beginning to cause a stir in America. "Twist of Shadows"
had sold in excess of 300,000 copies. The band's fourth album "Phoenix"
released worldwide in 1991 was their last album on PolyGram and hadecstatic
reviews but sold not as much as their predecessor despite of their loyal U.S
fan base. The band embarked on sell out tours around the world and featured
in college alternative and mainstream Billboard charts. "Metamorphosis"
and "Headclouds" are the latest two albums, released on Zok Records,
an independent label, solely working for Xymox. Here, in addition to their trademark
choral sounds and hypnotic electro rhythms, are albums taking a whole range
of styles and influences, taking Xymox into the'90s dance era, it's the work
of a band who are never afraid to take chances.
In 1994
Xymox released their first (1984 ,500 copies) limited available mini album "Subsequent
Pleasures" on Double Dutch Records and Zok Records released a REMIX album
which contains only radio edits of the albums "Metamorphosis " and
"Headclouds" compiled together. In 1996 Xymox contributed music for
a CD-Rom project named "Total Mayhem" released worldwide by Domark...
In 1997 Ronny Moorings ended the Xymox era , reformed Clan of Xymox and the
band signed to respectively a German and a USA based Independent label named
Pandaimonium Records and Metropolis Records.
The album "Hidden Faces" of Clan of Xymox relates to their 4-AD years
with a nineties feel to it; Various tracks sound heavy , layered with guitars,
pounding rhythms, anguished & dark brooding vocals and dreamlike keyboard
pads.
"Hidden Faces" was Produced by Dave M.Allen (Sisters of Mercy, The
Cure) and John A. Rivers (Dead Can Dance, Love and Rockets) This album marked
the reformation of Clan Of Xymox and it's attitude towards it's own written
history, convincing everyone once again of their qualities both on recordings
and live performances.
In 1997 and 1998 Clan of Xymox were touring their album "Hidden Faces"
and played also their favourite songs from the 4-AD era of which the reactions
and reviews have been ecstatic. They played already in the USA, South America
and most countries of Europe, headlining festivals with high lights such as
the Wave Gotik Festival in Leipzig and the Zillo Festival, performing in front
of 25.000 people and keep on intrigue and bedazzling people all over the world
with their live show.
Also Two
singles "Out Of The Rain" and "This World" were released
by Pandaimonium and were ranking in the top 10 of the German Independent charts
and numerous Indie charts all over the world.
March/April 1999 saw the word wide release of their new album named "Creatures",
again beautifully mixed by John A.Rivers and Ronny, also 4-AD re released the
first self titled album "Clan of Xymox" with extra bonus tracks, plus
the album "Medusa" including bonus tracks in the USA domestically.Clan
of Xymox backed up the new album "Creatures" with an extensive world
tour in 1999, and started in the United States with COX headlining on the prestigious
sold out Convergence Festival in New Orleans, continued their USA tour in two
parts, and got a special feature in the prestigious Billboard magazine.
The album had rave reviews and numerous articles in prestigious music magazines
around the globe with several hight positions in the alternative charts peaking
at DAC number 4 for several weeks. In the Orkus issue of May in Germany the
band is hailed separately as band, act and tour of the month, and album of the
month with a review placing number 1 of their charts and number 2 in Soundcheck
of Sonic Seducer/Zillo.
In the year 2000 Clan of Xymox concentrated also on a tour and promotion in
Europe, East Europe the USA/Canada and Latin America and continued to play a
great number of Festivals during the summer in Europe with a personal highlight
for the band being the former Olympic Stadium Palacio d' Deportes in Mexico
City where 20.000 people attended their concert. In August 2000 Ronny Moorings
mixed the final Live Recordings of the South and Central American Shows and
finished the new single called "Liberty" and Mojca keeping pace with
her beautiful artwork. Both were released in October with the double album simply
named "LIVE" whilst Clan Of Xymox kept on touring Europe! Again both
releases and tour got ecstatic reviews.
September 2001 saw the Clan live at big festivals such as Mera Luna, Zillo and
Eurorock but also the release of "Notes From The Underground", acclaimed
by critics as their best work ever. The album ranked already No 1 in the USA
's Musicfolio chart as the best album of 2001 and reached No 2 in the well known
DAC charts plus numerous chart positions around the globe.
The year 2002 saw on April 26th the very first Remix Album of the band, all
tracks of "Notes From The Underground" remixed by Front 242, Frontline
Assembly, Cut Rate Box, Assemblage 23, Perfidious Words, In Strict Confidence
, DJ Ram, Iris, Sophya , Angels & Agony, Tri-State , Beborn Beton, Aiboforcen,
Damon Fries of Boudoir, Dirk Budde of The Second Sight, it is called "Remixes
From The Underground". Around the release of "Remixes From The Underground"
they surprised the european audience with a brand new songs called "There
Is No Tomorrow", available on the compilation "Songs Of Pain"
and since September 27th of 2002 also on the self titled single, featuring the
album version, remixes by highly acclaimed artists like RUN LEVEL ZERO, FADING
COLOURS and FROZEN AUTUMN. Those mixes aswell as the track "The Second
Time" won't appear anywhere else, while "Courageous" gives you
a forecast of the new album "Farewell".
Clan of Xymox spent the two years following Notes from the Underground to work
on this album. Being the latest in the legacy of the Clan of Xymox, "Farewell"
yields club-friendly songs sitting comfortably along side moody atmospheric
tracks to create a hybrid which can only remotely be described as Dark Goth
Electro. The basic theme that runs through "Farewell" is about leaving
everything behind and going away, which can be exhibited through the lyrics
that tell the sad and bitter tales of love and relationships. Read the official

in the official german alternative charts (DAC) and number two in the worldwide
DJ Charts "native 25". A southamerican tour coincided the release
and was a plain success and a big pleasure for Clan Of Xymox.
In the mid eighties, Clan of Xymox helped define the very beginning of the electro-gothic
movement. Now they further define its future.
After two and half years of silence they finally released with "Weak In
My Knees" as new EP - a full length album called "Breaking Point"
was released on April 21st of 2006!
And yes, we heard the rumours, we were asked if Clan Of Xymox really quit -
an easy suggestion with album titles like “Farewell” and than “The
Best Of”. Ridiculous thoughts though, the band played live all over the
globe, moved to Leipzig, Germany and was just working hard on the follow up
to “Farewell”, which topped the german indie charts (DAC) and also
entered the Native 25 charts shortly after the release.
“Farewell” gained a massive press feedback and many reviewers called
it “the best Clan Of Xymox” release ever.
Well..."Breaking Point" is ready to take that position...
“Breaking Point” is a perfect blend of the best Clan Of Xymox ingredients
you can get. Tough guitar lines, strong bass sounds mixed with atmospheric and
powerful synthlines and Ronnys deep, sensuous harmonic voice. This is the mixture
that makes each Clan Of Xymox release - that actually makes Clan Of Xymox unique.
“Breaking Point” - contrary to what the title might suggest - stands
in best tradition to the almost “classical” Clan Of Xymox sound:
the opener “Weak In My Knees” is a club hits par excellence: mighty
tunes, powerful chorus line, a perfect sing-a-long melody which catches the
listener in an instant. The following track “Calling You Out” shows
them from their darker, even more aggressive side. Straight guitar lines, no
compromises made.
“She’s Dangerous” is yet another song that will end up as
a dance floor hit, a song that grows by itself, wonderful synth lines, a straight
rhythm and a permanent hookline.
“Eternally”, “We Never Learn” and “Cynara”
are songs that will capture the hearts of their “old” fans immediately.
Quiet...in the best meaning...slow and thoughtful - made for the moment and
the eternity. “Be My Friend” is another club hit: powerful, thrilling

“Pandora’s Box” - an interlude - opens for the aggressive
song “Under The Wire” - a track that demonstrates perfectly the
rockier side of Clan Of Xymox, even though the use of guitars is almost hidden.

May 18th of 2007 saw the release of "Heroes E.P.". Ronny takes one
of the classics in music history and gives it back to the fans, new and improved.
The industrial version of the song is slow, almost melancholic - in other words,
typical CLAN OF XYMOX - while the pop version of the original song is more of
an homage to his time without the Clan. The first time Ronny performed the song
was as a guest singer for PINK TURNS BLUE at Wave Gotik Treffen 2006.
“On A Mission” is a brand new track, done in the best tradition
of club hits such as “There’s No Tomorrow” or “Weak
In My Knees”. This isn’t the first time we’ve said it, and
it won’t be the last, but no other artist outside of Ronny can get modern
Electro sounds out of a guitar for the Dancefloor scene and remain trend free.
This is the reason for his longevity and his loyal fanbase.
With “Be My Friend”, one of the most successful songs from the “Breaking
Point” album was added in a new mix.
